Hot Head Improvements Working
April 2013
Work is underway in the Hot Heading Department to improve operations by reducing the time it takes to change over from one part to the next. These "setups" as they are called can be time consuming, often taking more than three hours to complete.
Using some tools first introduced by Toyota, MSA is working to reduce its setup times dramatically. We began by videotaping setups, then we analyzed each individual step. This allowed us to develop a standard way to set up a press which is now in use. This also is working to reduce setup times.
MSA has a variety of hot presses of different sizes and types which make setups unique to individual machines. Standardizing things such as the bolster plate, where the heading dies are placed, the die cases, and the dies themselves along with heater coils and stops are in the works.
